A Letter from Dirk — writing from Ferrara, Italy

Hi and Howdy Everyone,

Please, you of my magical inner circle, forgive me for not writing. My plate is full here and it’s ridiculous to have to write the same news over and over again to everybody.  I’m hoping this email blast will suffice. I welcome and answer your emails from here, of course.

I’m in the beginning stages of making the first and only ‘Dirk Hamilton and The Bluesmen’ studio album. Time is limited and I have gigs to play and travelin’ to do and I’m writing a new song and also will soon be listening to takes from the new solo album and hope to sequence and push forward that project at the same time I do all this stuff here. It seems impossible to do all this at the same time, but it’s a high-class problem I’d say, and I’ll do my best. I’m far from a high achiever type for sure. In fact, I’m quite lazy. I have always felt that it’s fundamental for an artist to thoroughly relax and have as much fun as possible. That’s what works for me anyway. (but maybe that’s also why I’ve never experienced broad success!? I never have really gotten serious about the business side of things…I try.)

Oh well…the funding for these projects has come as if by magic and I’m real grateful to my benefactors and friends for making this work possible. I hope to have the solo album pressed and out by May and I hope to get the Italian record out before the summer tour begins, if not, then by the Sumiswald Festival in Switzerland in October.

I forget how firmly ensconced I am in Ferrara. The first days here walking these city streets I met so many friends and acquaintances and people who know me from all the gigs I’ve played here over the years that I’m quite dazzled by it. I feel more at home here then I do in Dallas, for sure, and as much as any place in the states, I think... even with the language being different. My Italian, is just adequate I’d say.

I want to thank all you who came to the gig in San Pedro in January. It was sold out, and the folks who run it are SO kind and cool. It’s one of those rare, perhaps anachronistic, sparkling points of light that remind me of the 60’s and 70’s. I believe I covered all the other gigs from that California tour in the last email to all of you.

Anyway, love to all and I hope to see you at a gig or a bowling alley or somewhere, sometime.

P.S.  Here’s a quote I’ve always loved from the beautiful
E.E. Cummings:

“I’d rather learn from one bird how to sing than to teach ten thousand stars how not to dance.”

Here’s to us, The Learners in the Land of Not!

“Most of the people in THIS world are good”
(I said that.)
