A letter from Dirk

FROM ITALY

Hello, My Friends on the Email List!

I'm gonna just start talking: Italy reminds me of California in the summer; golden landscapes with deep, rich greens. Rolling hills. Hot as hell inland. After one gig they took us on a helicopter ride over the vineyards of Clavesana. We’d played in an impossible church with 30 foot high ceilings. It was a magical night despite the impossible cathedral echo. “Bob”Formignani on lead guitar. The priest was a wonderful little guy, happy to have us and not at all begrudging like some priests can be.

All the food was fried, dessert too!?
Another night a songwriter from Nashville had his gig bag stolen, passport, tickets and all, so the promoters called me to open for Johnny Falstaff at a country gig last minute. We drove up together in his van with his German family. Johnny’s from Houston and can kill that honky-tonk stuff. I opened the show cowboy hat-less. Played ‘I Should’ve Never Left Texas” to show I cared. Italian line dancers all cowboyed up and line dancing. We played Tiffany American Bar here in Ferrara twice, Bob and I. The place is owned by four brothers who have become good friends and it’s the hangout for most of my musician friends here. It’s always a fun gig.

Up in the Alps we played that Selva di Valgardena gig for Maurice and his family. A perfect gig as always; wonderful restaurant and good pub downstairs, great hotel upstairs. It was a packed house and as usual everybody was ready to rock, except for some dumb kids who thought it was perfectly okay to stand right below me in front of the stage and talk their kids stuff yelling over my solo thing. I had to stop mid song and send them outside… in the nicest way, of course.
In Sarzana I was a woman’s birthday present. They hid me during dinner and afterwards brought her in blindfolded to the music room where they did the big reveal… there I was behind the microphone resplendent in all my giant ugly guy with a gut glory. It was both embarrassing and touching. She turned baby blanket pink and was obviously surprised and delighted.

After another gig, after selling and signing records, packing up and thanking the sound guys, the promoters took us to a restaurant where most of the late night diners there had been at the concert. As I walked in door the place erupted in applause. This is one of the many benefits of not being famous: When stuff like this happens I’m deeply moved and humbled. I never want to become so jaded that I'm
impervious to the applause or the sincere thanks from someone who has been touched by my music. I am really and truly to the point now that I not only accept my hard history but am truly grateful for it, as I am for every minute, every note and each breath I take.

Love, Health and Clarity to You All

My mom died. We were expecting it, but still… I’m returning to California for her memorial after the last gig in Italy 8/14. She was the most unpretentious person I’ve ever known. Everybody loved Avis. She loved to have fun. She loved us. Mom supplied the love which has been the foundation of my strength throughout my life.
