A letter from Dirkposter

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!

The thing that stands out number one in the events of last year for me is my good friend, Dale who switched from the political right to the left! When does that ever happen? I’ve seen folks go right but neve r have I seen one go left. I was shocked, lifted and amazed! When I asked him how this miracle happened he simply said, “I did the research”. Beautiful! You made my year, Dale!

The legendary Fort Worth Songwriter Shawn Phillips once told me, “If you make people think they’re thinking they’ll love you, but if you really challenge them to think they’ll hate your guts!”

So true! Wanna do some research? Go see James Steele and Donald Barlett. These guys have no political agenda. They’re just two intelligent guys who love our country and only want to dig out the truth and air it. Bless their souls. barlettandsteele.com

I took my kids to California for Christmas this year. They hadn’t been there or seen their relations for over 4 years. It was a stretch for me financially even with the help I got from my ex (thanks again Tyrette), but it was something I couldn’t not do. It just so happened that EVERYBODY went to Christmas in California that year, all our kin from all over the country. It was wonderful seeing my kids reconnect with all their cousins aunts and uncle. They surprised grandma and grandpa when they walked in the door Christmas day and met them and hugged them and grandma and grandpa didn’t know who these huggy young people were at first. It was a hoot.

I toured Italy 3 times last year and also played a gig in Switzerland. I toured California twice or 3 times. The shows are almost always good or great these days from my perspective. I just wish more young folks would come out. I think it’s inevitable that something horrible is going to happen as the result of this internet revolution but I’m not sure what. It feels like our very souls are being sucked out. I was at a concert here in Dallas with my son and while we sat in our seats waiting for the show to begin, we stared out over the thousand-plus crowd of people around and below us, and most were hunched over their tiny telephones with blue-green faces glowing. It was chilling. Shake THAT off and read me say that I had a swell time on my little east coast tour hanging with the crazies at Georgie Jessup’s house, seeing dear east coast friends, playing for friends and strangers and fans. I am truly blessed. The tip of the top of the fun factor was playing with Don Evans on lead guitar. What a pleasure. One of my fondest wishes is that a way will appear to play a ton of gigs with him before we kick the bucket forty or fifty years hence.

The last thing I want to report is that between Dallas, Texas and Ferrara, Italy we’re mixing the new (and first) Dirk Hamilton and The Bluesmen album right now. It should be out after a few months and it’s truly a sweet, rockin’ thing. The Bluesmen are a marvelous band and these songs are very, very cool, plus it’s completely different than anything I’ve ever done. I’ll let you know.

Oh yeah! And the FOLK documentary is coming out this year! I’m one of the three main ‘acts’ that Sara Terry’s film crew followed for over 2 years, so I should be in it some. I know they’re using 7 of my songs cuz I just signed the release forms for them. I hope I don’t come off lookin’ like a jerk in it, cuz I know I can be a jerk sometimes. Anyway, I’ll let you know what’s up with it.

A special thanks to all of you who have actually, materially helped me finance my projects and continue my work this past year. You are saints to me and there are no words to express my gratitude. Thanks too to all of you who come to the shows, and I send my best wishes to all (yes, even my friends on the right). 2013 sounds like an inauspiciously numbered year, but who knows?

One thing life has taught me: wonders never cease.

My very best to each and every one of you.

Love,

Dirk
