Hello ya’ll!

So I played The Palms Playhouse solo gig. The Palms is always a pleasure. It truly is the ‘cultural oasis’ it bills itself to be. Some of my best memories live there both as an artist and as an audient. I opened for John Hammond, John Hiatt, Greg Brown, NRBQ, Taj Mahal, Commander Cody and a ton of other great ones over the years, and I’ve done a bunch of headline shows there too. It began as a magical barn in Davis and now it's moved to a relatively spacious, charming old theater in the little town of Winters, California. It hurts my heart that clubs like this that smatter the United States are becoming an endangered species.

Occasionally I find myself playing in situations where the people at the gig don’t even know how to listen to music of substance. We’re growing new generations who believe the zenith of the ‘art’ of music is that “American Idol” crap. It reminds me of my childhood when all singers seemed to me to be phonies; heavily made up women in sparkly cocktail dresses and men in suits and ties always smiling those scary non-smiles that never cracked through entire songs. Frank Sinatra and all his crowd seemed to be kind of okay cuz getting drunk sounded like fun but, still, I wasn’t looking forward to adulthood. The adult world was terrifying to me. I’d have to grow up and wear suits and ties and spend all my time tryin’ to sell shit?! It was unthinkable to me and I wasn’t attracted to doing music for a job, that’s for sure. I decided to be a skin diver because Lloyd Bridges and ‘The Aquanaughts’ seemed at least to be doing adventurous stuff and it appeared to me that being a skin diver meant you automatically became a badass fist fighter too, which was attractive. I wrote short stories and poetry of sorts just because I enjoyed it. I learned to play guitar because that was fun too. It wasn’t ‘til Bob Dylan was invented that I knew what I was going to do. Artistically, now, the lowest common denominator has sunk, and we’re back to showbiz where most acts are only acting and selling. When’s the last time you went out for live music? Most of the best stuff is at these little clubs like The Palms. Yada dada…. I’m preaching to the choir here, I know.

The Waldofest the day after was typical for me; there were so many people I knew I was almost overwhelmed. I was assigned to invent and present “The Waldo Toast” and I tried but I just couldn’t get through it. I was going to improvise and talk about him. I can talk about him no problem one on one usually, but something about talking to a big crowd there in that situation always gets my goat. Suffice it to say he was a great, unique man; big and deep and full of fun. The best things are rarely famous.

Love,

Dirk
