A letter from Dirk

Well, I’m back from Italy. It was good. Every concert we played was great or real good at the least. Fronting The Bluesmen is always fun and it gets more fun with each tour as we evolve as a band and grow tighter and tighter. ESP’s more about magic than science, I think.

This tour, two Italian doctor friends of mine made it possible for me to get some medical attention I’d needed for years but couldn’t afford in the states. I will be forever grateful to them for their kindness and generosity and to Italy for it’s humane health system.

We Baby Boomers were branded to believe we had the best country in the world and that people all over the world were clamoring to live here in this wonderful haven of liberty. Yeah, right. The truth is, most Europeans look at our health system and are flabbergasted by our lack of compassion for our own. They think we’re barbarians. Oscar Wilde once quipped that the USA was, “…the only country I know of that’s gone from barbarism straight to decadence without ever passing through civilization”. I’ve thought of this quote countless times over the decades of my touring in Europe.

On one of my early tours of Europe after being told we were going to be playing a rally for the communist party in Rome, my knee-jerk reaction had been a deep, unreasoned uneasiness. As it turned out, that commie audience was a shaggy, bohemian bunch just like our band! They were pro-peace and anti-oligarchy. They just wanted a fair shake for working people and poor folks just like we did. They were we! Even though, intellectually, I’d figured out years before that communism was just another political philosophy, only as good as the people running it, I still experienced this Pavlov’s dog-type reaction! I was embarrassed in front of myself that I’d allowed myself to be so easily brainwashed. After this experience, I became more careful, began thinking a little harder, noticing a little better. E.E. Cummings said, “dive for dreams or a slogan may topple you”.

So if the messages you are hearing from the Tea Party people resonate with you, if Sarah Palin’s speeches cut through the word muck all round you and make sense of it all for you, if you find yourself drawn to the Fox News Network, “dive for dreams or a slogan may topple you!

During this last 6-week-stint in Italy, beside all the concerts we did, I recorded 10 new songs solo I and did something I never thought I’d ever do: I wrote words for something like 6 new Roberto Formignani (Bob Forman) songs spontaneously in the studio and we laid down all the vocals one by one as I dashed off the words! This is kind of a bid deal for me. There are stories about Dylan and other artists making records this way but I never thought I could do something like this myself. This is one of the things I like the best about this mystery we call life: the surprise of it all. If you stay awake and keep trying, you naturally grow and miracles happen.
