"I received a copy of what was to become Dirk Hamilton's "Yep!" album several years ago in a big pile of "stuff to be listened to". I was intrigued, having been a fan of "Meet Me at the Crux" and "Thug of Love'. I went to see Dirk in a dismal club on a cold, rainy night. He performed to a handful of hardcore fans, overcoming an overly noisy kitchen. I was totally blown away by the depth of his songwriting and the power of his singing and playing. By the time he got to the last verse of "Tell Me What It Is", I was hooked. (Listen to the words — you'll see what I mean). Since then, making an album with Dirk has become an obsession. this is one of those albums that you make because the music demands it, and I feel lucky to be a part of it. Dirk Hamilton is a true American master."

ASKIN' FOR APPLES

QUEEN OF THE FINAL DREAM listen
by Dirk Hamilton and Eric Westphal

Do you remember it was last September when you
bent my fender with a sickening crunch?
That old car is like my body
all beat up but still we got a million miles to go
before we stop for lunch

I can feel you
Queen of the Final Dream
now if only I could see you
I can feel you
Queen of the Final Dream
Will my suffering reveal you?

Contradictions serve to fork up fictions out of
deep convictions in philosophy stew
Simple things become confusing
Put on years and wind up losing
friends and opinions that you thought were true

I can feel you
Queen of the Final Dream
now if only I could see you
I can feel you
Queen of the Final Dream
Will my suffering reveal you?

Despite the constant debating
we are only animals eating, defecating
People do what people do
like bugs do what bugs do
Positivity is ever opening
Negativity is closing
I will always be a romantic
sell the car to pay the mechanic
peeling off mistakes I make like clothing

I can feel you
Queen of the Final Dream
now if only I could see you, touch you
but I feel you
Queen of the Final Dream
Will my suffering reveal you?
Will my suffering release me, too?
Will my suffering reveal you?

BLACK DOG BLUES listen

You don't know what I know
and I don't know a thing
when we hit the Sweet Forever
we'll know everything

There's no need to worry
so we're gigglin' under fire
Here's your hat, what's your hurry?
Do what you desire

Black Dog Blues Black Dog Blues
if the devil don't wag this world
then why's you cats out there all lickin' his shoes?

When accountants count their blessings
and all the checks are in the mail
we'll put a poet in the White House
lock a lawyer down in jail
and leaving love to love's dominion
we'll let the busybodies be
'cuz while they're busy in their bodies
souls flow free

Black Dog Blues Black Dog Blues
if the devil don't wag this world
then why's you cats out there all lickin' his shoes?
Black Dog Blues Black Dog Blues
if the devil don't wag this world
then why's you cats out there
all lickin' his shoes?

Some go for the money, some go for the buzz
but it'll be the Sweet Forever soon enough for us

Kenneth Patchen said it, now I've sung it on to you
if the devil don't wag this world
then why's you cats out there all lickin' his shoes?

Black Dog Blues Black Dog Blues
if the devil don't wag this world
then why's you cats out there all lickin' his shoes?
Black Dog Blues Black Dog Blues
if the devil don't wag this world
then why's you cats out there all lickin' his shoes?

DANGEROUS listen
by Dirk Hamilton and Eric Westphal

Dangerous — everybody is alone
It's strange for us (even talkin' on the telephone)
Look at the sunset materialize
yellow like the blood of a bug drippin' down the dirty purple sky
Electric light has canceled the night
Now things are goin' bump in the day

CHORUS
Danger there's too many strangers
and Danger can make a heart a stone

Dangerous — and life is hard
in a world of the nookely bomb, starvation and the credit card
People Who Need People - they must be very happy here, but I wish
a couple billion would take a rocketship away somewhere
I gotta admit that I'm frightened a bit
now things are goin' bump in the day

CHORUS

There's too many strangers caught in the danger zone
It makes your heart a stone

I'm walkin' down the street thinkin' on my feet
I wonder how the ground feels covered in concrete
If a man falls in the city, ya' know it doesn't make a sound

The ghosts of all the wild things that man has displaced
they howl and growl and they haunt this place
they croak and sing invisible wings are flappin' around my face
I'm Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay watchin' a thousand fish decay
Money does the talkin' and The Money don't care . Everywhere

CHORUS

HEROES (maybe) listen
by Dirk Hamilton and Eric Westphal

You go your way I'll go mine
Any way we go I'm still surprised to find
I'm feeling good with my heart on your sleeve
You're so good you're a hero maybe
You're so good you're a hero maybe

I'm not a kissy huggy kind of guy
but it would be a lie to deny that I'm
feelin' right with your heart on my sleeve
You're so good you're a hero maybe
You're so good you're a hero maybe

Loving boys and girls
living in an ugly world
hearing the countdown to zero
are heroes

So let this song now decorate the air
and if there's a future let it tell them we were here
and celebrate those that have enough to love

They're so good they are heroes maybe
You're so good you're a hero maybe
You're a hero maybe
You're a hero
You're a hero maybe

THE RELATIVE HEALTH OF YOUR SOUL INSIDE listen

Think on yourself and how you're living
Count up the love you get then add it to the
love that you're giving
subtract it from the times that you run and you hide
The answer you get is the relative health of your
soul inside

Do you have a girl? Do you really love her?
Do you listen when she speaks or do you place
yourself above her?
Do you do her right, or do you take her for a ride?
The answer you get is the relative health of your
soul inside

Your Soul Inside Your Soul Inside
It can't do you wrong it's strong
there's nowhere you can run and hide
from Your Soul Inside Your Soul Inside
The answer you get is the relative health of your
soul inside

Tell yourself the truth
there's no need to fear it
don't you know that the truth can't help you
if you haven't got the guts to hear it

Your Soul Inside Your Soul Inside
It can't be fought or bought
it's nothing you can push aside
it's your Soul Inside
The answer you get is the relative health of your
Soul Inside
The answer you get is the relative health of your
Soul Inside

TELL ME WHAT IT IS (that keeps us tryin') listen

With my cheek against your breast
so wonderful, warm
a teardrop from your eye fell into mine
and the liquid sorrow
touched me to the marrow
and I wondered what it is that keeps us tryin'

A blessing and a curse conceived a universe
and we in turn invented Robin Hood
beneath the moon's blind eye
that doesn't give a wink what we think
or if we're being bad or good

And if you know what it is
tell me what it is
tell me what it is that keeps us tryin'
Are we heading for some light
or livin' just to die?
I wan'na know what it is that keeps us tryin'

I couldn't feel much worse
for all the people that I've hurt
thinking I was being loyal to my stars
I know the truth can never lie
but now I've seen it from both sides
I know that it changes
like the playful astral hours

And if you know what it is
tell me what it is
tell me what it is that keeps us tryin'
I no longer shut my eyes
to the chaos in the skies
I wan'na know what it is that keeps us tryin'

I could be losing touch from traveling too much
my bags are both my burden and my home
but on a slow Italian train
I saw rainbows in the rain
and an answer in the sparkle in her eyes

And if you what it is tell me
tell me what is that keeps us tryin'
I'm no longer terrified or afraid to die
I wan'na know what it is that keeps us tryin'

LUCK
by Dirk Hamilton and Eric Westphal

They say that travel broadens the mind
I've been a travelin' fool
and it ain't broadened mine
I guess I'm dumb
so can you please explain how come
a true free-wheelin' poet, wild and young
became a guitar bum

Listen Lady Luck
send a little good luck
I'm just about to give up
Send a little luck

They say that time heals all wounds
Well Doctor Tic Toc please clot this wound
fairly soon
because it aches and
I'm developing the shakes
and I am dreaming castle dungeons
full of snakes
I've paid for my mistakes

Send a little luck
specifying good luck
I've had enough of bad luck
Send a little luck

To win the lottery would be o.k. with me
I'd record a great CD
then I'd finance an audience
to love and obsess on me

Hear me Lady Luck
I would drive a dump truck
all the way to Egypt
for a little luck

Listen Lady luck
send a little good luck
all my luck has dried up
Send a little luck

WHISTLING IN THE DARK listen

I woke up in the middle of the night
circled in the beam of a helicopter light, oh
And with the head of a goose and the body of a man
he kissed my cheek and shook my hand, oh

Then by surprise before my eyes he changed his size
became a bubble in the sea, in the sea, yeah
he was a bubble in the sea, in the sea, in the sea
the sea the sea the sea

All day long we whistle in the dark
busy little people only playing our part
We're only whistling in the dark
Miraculous things can happen in the night
when dreams release the soul to fly
We're only whistling in the dark

When life goes by in the blink of an eye
do you ever wonder why you gotta live
like you do like you do, yeah
you gotta live like you do, like you do, like you do
you do you do you do

All day long we whistle in the dark
busy little people only playing our part
We're only whistling in the dark
only whistling in the dark
and we're not listening to the heart

I woke up in the middle of the day
on a one way street going the other way, oh
When a man with a job and great big gun said,
"Ya' can't say her and ya' can't go home!" oh
His motorcycle starts just like our human hearts
with just a tiny spark you get the fire
then you move then you move, yeah
you get the fire, then you move, then you move
then you move a move a move a move

All day long we whistle in the dark
busy little people only playing our part
We're only whistling in the dark
only whistling in the dark
and we're not listening to the heart
whistling in the dark
we're not listening to the heart

STRANGE FRIEND

I've been down but still I'm hangin' in
Played the clown with a belly full of gin
Tossed around and bitten by the wind
I cooked inside my skin, then I began again

On a night that lasted like a year
Torn apart, I looked into a mirror
and a smile that changed into a leer
said "Look what we have here!"
and I curled up in fear

Strange Friend Friendly Stranger
live in danger friendly stranger feed your anger
Strange Friend constant changer
live in danger friendly stranger free your anger

And you know that I've searched for
the girl with sparkler eyes
and it had to be her, no cozy compromise
but ya' know that the girl, I've come to realize
she was just a thin disguise for the friend
that I denied

Sometimes I wake up
and I don't even know my own name
But I recognize the throbbing
of an old familiar pain
For what mankind has done I feel ashamed
It ain't my fault, but I only have myself to blame

Strange Friend Friendly Stranger
live in danger friendly stranger feed your anger
Begin again constant changer
live in danger friendly stranger free your anger
Strange Friend constant changer rearranger
see it feel it free it begin again

WALK ON LAKE GEORGE

We were over at Uncle Art's house
playin' a game called "In Between"
Everybody was losin' and the pot was
huge when the cards came to me
Uncle Bud dealt me an ace (I called it "low")
then he rolled out a King
Cousin Kent said "You don't have enough
butt in your britches to pot that thing!"
I said "I'll pot it!
Yeah, I got it!"
Then I thought about my wallet
in my back pocket...
I lost all my money but I didn't care,
cuz I was happy just to be with all my friends
It's Christmas time and I'm home again

On the way back to Grandma's house
we turned off by a bridge and
walked down to the lake
where Cousin Jimmy said
"Stomp your boot down cousin!"
I said "What?"
He said "Stomp your boot down on the ice...
just do it!"
So I stomped my foot down on the ice
Then way out in the lake
from under the ice
came a sound I'd never heard before
It sounded something like "dongk"
Then a few seconds later from even
further out you could hear "dongk, dongk"
and Jimmy looked at me and laughed
and took out running over the lake,
jumped high in the air and came down
sliding on his shoes
and pretty soon we were both out there running
jumpin' and slidin', slippin' and fallin'
and pushin' each other down and
rollin' around in the snow on the ice

All alone in our own winter scene
like one of them shake-up snowflake things
there's snow on the ice water below so cold
STOMP 'YER BOOT DOWN COUSIN!
Take a Walk on Lake George
Walk on Lake George

Snowflakes floating in the air
everywhere there's snow gentle, soft and deep
and walkin' on that lake that night
it was just young Jimmy and me
walkin' in silence, a magical quiet
everything so still, a delicate hush

And Jimmy turned to me and
said "This is Indiana" and I said yes

And for the very first time in a long, long time
in my life I really felt that
everything with the world was all right

Beaten down by modern city living violence
We got a dose of soothing silent
snow on the ice
water below so cold
STOMP 'YER BOOT DOWN COUSIN!
Take a walk on Lake George
Take a walk on Lake George
In the snow
beautiful
wonderful
magical snow
a miracle of snow
Hey Cousin Jimmy
Do you remember Cousin Jimmy
the magical night
the night we walked on Lake George?

NEW EARTH SUIT

Old soul
hello
how ya' doin' in your new earth suit?

It's got hands to hold
and feet to go
lookin' for adventure in a new earth suit

Same dance
new chance

And if the bad guys come
you know you got the gun
of your big space daddy in his old earth suit

You'll be lookin' for adventure in your new earth suit

Little boy
you're a giant joy
and lookin' pretty in your new earth suit

We're hoping that you're happy in your new earth suit
